The new TOP TIER™+ fuel standards are designed for today’s state-of-the-art spark ignited engine technologies, especially high-efficiency GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) fuel systems coupled with down-sized boosted engines. Modern GDI engines deliver maximum performance when operating cleanly. The new TOP TIER™+ Approved Gasoline standards add three new engine tests to help ensure cleaner fuel injectors, optimal emissions and more efficient combustion.

Today’s high-efficiency GDI engines require optimal combustion performance.
While GDI engines deliver greater power and fuel
efficiency, they can, in some cases, also lead to increased fuel injector carbon buildup. The new TOP TIER™+
fuel detergency standards have evolved to help keep engines clean and
performing at their best.

Extended options for diesel engines
The Diesel program now has two levels*:
- TOP TIER™ Diesel (Base) – great cleaning power + better control of water/sediment.
- TOP TIER™+ Diesel (Plus) – all the above plus better wear protection and oxidation stability for fuel system parts.
- Base and Plus availability varies by station. Use the TOP TIER™ Station Finder to find participating retailers.

Look for the label at the pump
- New logos and pump labels are being introduced. You should clearly see the official TOP TIER™ seal on or around the pump.
- If you don’t see the seal of approval at your station, check our online brand list. If the brand appears there or on our Station Finder, you can trust you’re getting TOP TIER™ Approved Fuel.

- Fuel retailers are starting to roll out TOP TIER+ fuels in late 2025. By January 2027, most (if not all) approved brands should have transitioned for gasoline.
